The Wave Maker: The Story of Theme Park Pioneer George Millay by Tim O'Brien

Ripley Entertainment, 2004.
Walt Disney, the man, is (rightly) lauded as a theme park pioneer and creative genius. But there are other, largely unsung, heroes whose vision, imagination, and fortitude have also forged bold, new concepts and helped shape the amusement industry--people such as George Millay, the creator of both SeaWorld and Wet 'n Wild. The Wave Maker offers a candid peek at the man behind the (water) curtain.
While marine life parks and water parks are taken for granted today, neither would have flourished without Millay's foresight and ingenuity. The book traces the evolution of the original SeaWorld in San Diego, the rollout of the other SeaWorld parks, and Millay's messy ouster from the empire he built. Undaunted, he went on to create Orlando's flagship Wet 'n Wild and inspired a whole new genre of park fun. While he's carried the unofficial title for years, the World Waterpark Association recently cited Millay as the official "Father of the Water Park Industry."

Along with his oversize achievements, Millay has a Shamu-sized eccentric personality that makes for fascinating reading. Ultra-conservative, incredibly demanding, and oddly preoccupied with minutiae like his employees' hair length, Millay nonetheless commanded the respect and admiration of those who shared his amazing theme park journey. Their stories help paint an intriguing portrait of one of the industry's leading innovators.

Tim O'Brien, a journalist formerly with the trade publication, Amusement Business, and author of The Amusement Park Guide, is uniquely qualified to tell Millay's tale. The narrative jumps around a bit in time, but O'Brien's obvious passion for the industry and his loose, playful writing style make The Wave Maker an entertaining and informative read. Magic Mountain, which Millay and his SeaWorld cohorts unloaded soon after it opened, receives scant attention. But anyone interested in the behind-the-scenes intrigue involved in developing not one, but two theme park milestones will enjoy the book's insight into the early years of SeaWorld and Wet 'n Wild.
