Six Flags Ride Guide 2008

What's New for the 2008 Season at Six Flags Parks

Three years ago, Six Flags earned bragging rights when it debuted Kingda Ka, the world's tallest (456 feet) and fastest (128 mph) roller coaster at Six Flags Great Adventure in New Jersey. (The record still stands.) The new management team that took over the chain in late 2005 determined, however, that the company's reliance on teen-targeted coasters such as Kingda Ka was one of the primary reasons it had amassed over $2 billion in debt, and shifted its focus to family-friendly rides and attractions for the 2007 season. The family fun continues for the 2008 season, but there will be some new coasters rolling out in 2008 as well. Granted, the park chain doesn't have a ride that will be even remotely as outrageous as Kingda Ka, but the major new woodie coming to Six Flags St. Louis should deliver some wild thrills.

THE SIX FLAGS 2008 RIDE GUIDE

The Six Flags Ride Guide is arranged alphabetically by U.S. state. Montreal's La Ronde follows at the end of the list.

This page includes Six Flags parks in states from California to Louisiana. The next page has 2008 info about Six Flags parks in states from Maryland to Texas, plus Montreal.

CALIFORNIA

Six Flags Discovery Kingdom
Vallejo (near San Francisco), CA
Tony Hawk's Big Spin coaster

Discovery Kingdom will be getting a family-friendly spinning coaster themed to the famous skateboarder. Read more about Tony Hawk's Big Spin.

Six Flags Magic Mountain
Valencia (near Los Angeles), CA
X2 coaster makeover and Thomas the Tank Engine land

X is one of the most unusual--and thrilling--coasters in the world. Unfortunately, it's also been one of the slowest-loading and most trouble-prone coasters as well. Since it opened in late 2001, it has often been closed for repairs or operating at significantly less than peak capacity. Even when two of its trains have been running, lines have often swelled to an x-cruciating four hours and longer. With Six Flags' announcement that it will be pouring $10 million into the ride--an unusually high figure for a makeover--coaster fans have to hope that the investment will make X more reliable and cut down on wait times. According to the park chain, X will get redesigned trains as well as a new tunnel that will deliver visual, aural, and sensory effects. When it reopens in spring 2008, it will be rechristened X2. X was the first coaster to incorporate the "4th dimension." Like a hybrid Ferris wheel/roller coaster, the ride's seats, which are located along the sides of the tracks, can pivot 360 degrees forwards and backwards. Along with the new X2 name, Six Flags says the recast coaster will ply the "5th dimension."

For younger park-goers, Six Flags Magic Mountain will also introduce a new area themed to the popular children's TV and book series, Thomas the Tank Engine. There will be new rides (including, of course, a Thomas train ride) and characters to meet.

GEORGIA

Six Flags Over Georgia
Austell (near Atlanta), GA
Thomas the Tank Engine land
For younger park-goers, the park will introduce a new area themed to the popular children's TV and book series, Thomas the Tank Engine. There will be new rides (including, of course, a Thomas train ride) and characters to meet.

ILLINOIS

Six Flags Great America
Gurnee (near Chicago and Milwaukee)
The Dark Knight themed indoor coaster
Capitalizing on The Dark Knight frenzy that Six Flags hopes next year's (2008) Batman movie of the same name will generate, the chain is adding a themed indoor family coaster that should appeal to riders of nearly all thrill tolerance levels. Read more about The Dark Knight coaster.

KENTUCKY

Six Flags Kentucky Kingdom
Louisville
Mega Wedgie water slide
The Splashwater Kingdom water park will debut a bowl ride. The water slide will send riders aboard tubes down a tunnel and into a bowl where they will swish around a few times before getting flushed out the bottom into a splashdown pool.

Also, the park is removing the Superman: Tower of Power ride after the ride caused a gruesome accident in 2007.

LOUISIANA

Six Flags New Orleans
New Orleans
The future of the Katrina-damaged park still remains unclear, but it will not open this season.
