To commemorate the California that Walt Disney encountered when he first arrived to start his studio, the gateway street is an homage to a Jazz Age Los Angeles boulevard. According to David Caranci, the manager of resort enhancement at Disneyland, the Christmas decor remains true to the era of the 1920s and 1930s. Downtown shopping districts would have understated garland and tinsel and would not be adorned with electric lights. The mission bells are another nod to the period.
