Black Creek Sanctuary Mountain Creek

The Black Creek Sanctuary offers townhouses around the corner from Mountain Creek.

Arthur Levine
If a day trip to Mountain Creek is impractical, or if you want to extend some water park fun into a mini-vacation, Intrawest, the company that owns and manages the entire mountain complex, offers packages that include lodging at its Black Creek Sanctuary townhouses. The modern, upscale townhouses include one-, two-, and three-bedroom units, all smartly appointed with full kitchens, patio decks, and oversized bathrooms. Mountain Creek will tailor a lodging/park package to satisfy guests' needs.

Things to know

  • Location: Black Creek Sanctuary is on the Mountain Creek property, just around the corner from the water park, in Vernon, NJ
  • Phone: 973-209-3300
  • What: 133 fully equipped townhouse units
  • Lodging-water park packages available. The townhouses are available year round.

The homes are spacious and can comfortably accommodate a brood. Living room couches convert into beds. The two- and three-bedroom units include two large, full bathrooms. Many of the homes feature cathedral ceilings.

The kitchens, which include microwaves and dishwashers, make it easy to prepare meals (and rescue your vacation budget from some restaurant tabs). Meals can be served indoors or al fresco on the patio umbrella tables.

Amenities include in-unit washers and dryers (with a complimentary detergent package-- a nice touch), DSL Internet access, and digital cable television in the living room and bedrooms. The master bathrooms feature two-person tubs and stall showers. In the minor quibble department, there were no towel hooks near either of the showers in our house. That meant soggy walks across the bathroom to retrieve a towel. Even stranger, the stall shower had no soap dishes.

The "mountain homes" have a ski chalet motif. For water park guests, that means an incongruous melding of bathing suits, sun tan lotion, and flip flops with fireplaces, snowmen-adorned towel racks, and ski lockers. But summer gets some attention also. If guests aren't completely waterlogged from the park rides, Black Creek has a large, heated pool and hot tub available for guests.

There is a creek (presumably Black Creek) on the property. The old Action Park previously used it for a motorboat attraction. Now deemed protected wetlands, Intrawest is restoring the creek and building pathways so that guests can explore it.

The townhouses are actually privately owned, mostly as second homes. Mountain Creek rents the units on behalf of the owners.
