Mennello Musuem of American Folk Art
Orlando Loch Haven Park, (407) 246-4278This quirky museum showcases unique paintings and works of folk artists from Central Florida and throughout the U.S. The Mennello features noted area artist Earl Cunningham whose vivid paintings, with their highly saturated colors, seem to pop off the gallery walls.
Orlando Science Center
Orlando Loch Haven Park, (407) 514-2000When inclement weather threatens to rain on their theme park parade, vacationing families may want to consider heading over to the Science Center. Plenty of hands-on exhibits will keep visitors, particularly inquisitive children, occupied for hours. Exhibits explore Florida's eco-systems, math, physics, energy, space, and other topics. The museum also includes an observatory, and an IMAX giant-screen theater. Located in such close proximity to the most sophisticated theme parks on the planet, it's easy to become jaded about the presentations. Go expecting a decent urban science museum, rather than an Epcot-worthy E-ticket ride.
Other Orlando Attractions
If you think Orlando's cultural scene extends only as far as the "Mickey's Philharmagic" attraction at the Magic Kingdom, think again. The area offers a rich, diverse mix of museums, music, performing arts, and more. It's worth checking out the events that will be scheduled during your vacation. Perhaps, you can incorporate a night at the opera to go along with your days on the roller coasters. If you happen to be in Orlando during the wonderful Florida Film Festival (held in March), check it out. Rated one of the nation's best, it's a film-lover's nirvana featuring filmmaker symposiums, celebrities, exhibits, and hordes of premieres, independent films, animated movies, short films, and other screenings.- Florida Film Festival, various locations, held in March
