High Roller to Gather Moss

Thursday December 29, 2005
Want to ride the world's tallest roller coaster? Then you had better hop on a plane and head to Las Vegas, because tomorrow (December 30) will be the final ride for the High Roller atop the Stratosphere Tower. After about a decade in operation, the Stratosphere is dismantling the coaster to make way for another thrill ride. The hotel/casino has not revealed any details about the new project. Insanity and XScream, two of the other attractions that sit on top of the tower, would be fairly wimpy rides if they were at ground level. The psychological thrill of dangling 900 feet above the Vegas Strip, however, make them quite unnerving--and perhaps the most thrilling rides on the planet. With a top speed of 30 mph, no inversions, not much acceleration or g-forces, and hardly any drops, High Roller is relatively wimpy even perched on top of the Stratosphere. Most ride fans probably won't mourn its demise. And the prospect of what might replace it, given the devilish contraptions that the Stratosphere folks have uncorked the past few years, should put ride fans in high spirits.
