It has a Ghost Town all year long. But during the Halloween season, Knott's Berry Farm transforms itself into Knott's Scary Farm and celebrates vampires, ghouls, zombies, chainsaw-wielding lunatics, and all sorts of other baddies along with ghosts. Its Halloween Haunt is the oldest theme park event of its kind, and 2012 will mark its 40th anniversary.
For better or worse, it has evolved through the years and its formula of gotcha haunted mazes, creepy scare zones, and themed shows, infused with hearty doses of blood and gore, has become the template for Halloween events everywhere. This year's event will include an ode to Pinocchio (which could be subtitled "When Good Puppets Go Bad"), a maze that takes its inspiration from The Hunger Games, and an extra-charge maze that promises an ultra-scary experience (fresh underwear not included).
