New Ssssuper-Ssssmooth Coaster at Kings Island

Wednesday June 24, 2009
Kings Island calls Diamondback, the hypercoaster that opened this season, its "tallest, fastest, meanest ride." I can't argue with the first two. But meanest? I think that S.O.B--er, the wooden coaster, Son of Beast--is King Island's unequaled and all-time champion in the mean department. Diamondback, however, is the opposite of mean. It's silky smooth. And what kind of a mean ride would deliver such a mother lode of airtime? Read my review of Diamondback.

Photo: Diamondback's first drop is a face-melting 215 feet at an almost-vertical 74 degrees. ©Arthur Levine, 2009. Licensed to About.com.

Due to bad $ times (like everyone else) am looking into downsizing the Sept. Disney vacation into a maybe closer more afordable road or train trip from the Chicago/Milwaukee area. Kings Island and their new coaster (and their old one) sound great to me. Any tips?

Hi Donna-

Thanks for writing. “Staycations” seem to be the popular choice this year. You can search for parks near your home here:

I’ve got some savings and planning tips here:

Diamondback certainly was wonderful. And Kings Island has way more than one older coaster.

Keep in mind that most theme parks will only be open on weekends in September. If you defer your trip until October, you could visit a Halloween event at a theme park.

Wherever you end up going, have a ball!
