The Mouse Gives Away the House

Monday November 10, 2008
Amid the global financial meltdown, a general downturn in travel, and reports of sluggish bookings at its resorts, Walt Disney World is offering a doozy of a promotion. Guests who purchase packages before December 20 at select Value hotels in the Florida theme park empire, such as Disney's Pop Century Resort, can take advantage of a new "Buy 4, Get 3 Free" deal.

Good for nearly all 2009 dates from January 4 to April 4 and April 19 to June 27, vacationers will get an extra 3 nights of hotel accommodations and 3 days of theme park tickets when they book a 4-night package. And the Mouse will throw in a $200 Disney gift card for stays between January 4 and March 29. To learn more about the "Buy 4, Get 3 Free" promotion and other offers, go to my Florida Theme Park Deals page.

It's a good deal, but Disney isn't out of its mouse-eared mind. Since the first half of the year, particularly the first three months, is always a slow period for the resort, Disney typically offers off-season promotions. And it's unlikely folks planning vacations to WDW, especially in these trying economic times, would book a seven-night package without the incentive. This way, Disney gets the captive guests to empty their wallets on meals and other purchases for an extra three days. The difference between a regular WDW four-day Magic Your Way park ticket pass and a seven-day pass is only $9 per person anyways, so Disney isn't giving away too much there with the promotion. Still, it's a bold offer. Is it bold enough to crank up bookings? What do you think? Click on "Comments" below.
