Plans to Revive New Orleans' Coasters Derailed
Friday October 3, 2008
Closed after incurring Hurricane Katrina's wrath, Six Flags New Orleans has remained at half-mast. The park chain is apparently not interested in repairing and reopening the damaged park, but a company known as Southern Star Amusements had come forward with a $70-million plan to assume control of the property, add a water park, and double the number of rides. According to The Times-Picayune, the proposed project, which has been under consideration since February 2007, will not proceed. While no reasons were given, it's likely that the tightening credit market probably played a role in Southern Star's decision to suspend the deal. Opened in 2000, the park had a tough time meeting attendance projections both in its original incarnation as Jazzland and as Six Flags New Orleans. While reopening the park is on the City of New Orleans' post-hurricane wish list, Katrina may have dealt the property a deathblow.
