A Real WALL-E is Under Development by Disney

Monday August 18, 2008
Disney has always incorporated leading-edge technology into its theme parks, such as its pioneering work in what it dubbed "audio animatronics," the talking robotic characters that perform at its attractions. According to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, the company is taking the next step in robotics and plans to create autonomous characters that will be able to interact with park guests. Disney is partnering with Carnegie Mellon University and a team from Switzerland for the project. It all sounds vaguely like a subplot from "The Stepford Wives," doesn't it? Here's hoping the new breed of park robots doesn't run amok.

Interesting; this actually reminds me of the famous Simpsons episode “Itchy and Scratchy Land” when the robots do indeed run amok. If you recall, it was Bart’s flash camera that saved the day, so make sure you come prepared just in case…

Interesting that you mention this Brian. i just returned from Universal Orlando and will be posting a review of the wonderful new Simpons “Krustyland” ride. In the queue for the attraction, there are monitors playing newly created Krustyland shorts as well as excerpted scenes from related Simpsons episodes, including–you got it–”Itchy and Scratchy Land.” The ride is definitely in sync with the distinct Simpsons oeuvre. Fans of the show will love it.

If you’re trying to make me jealous, you’ve succeeded. :)

Sounds fun and looking forward to reading all about it!
