Wassssuppppp with the Busch Parks?
Monday July 14, 2008
After initially fending off advances from rival brewer InBev, beer giant and iconic American stalwart Anheuser-Busch has agreed to be purchased by the Brazilian-Belgian company for about $50 billion. That's a lot of brewskies. With the King of Beers dethroned, what will happen to Its theme park kingdom? The pending sale leaves the fate of the Busch Entertainment parks, including the three SeaWorld properties, two Busch Gardens parks, and Sesame Place unknown. According to the Tampa Bay Business Journal, InBev plans to sell off "non-core assets" which might include the parks. There are a handful of park operators that have the experience and wherewithal to take over the Busch park chain. Given the state of the economy and the industry, it's difficult to imagine a suitor making a reasonable offer at this time. It's also difficult to imagine InBev parting with the parks for anything less than a reasonable offer. Busch Entertainment has been a well-respected steward of its parks and has regularly invested new capital. In 2008, the chain opened the Aquatica water park next to SeaWorld Orlando. It recently announced plans for a four-park project in Dubai.
