The Pleasure's Been All Ours
Monday June 30, 2008
No club is an island, apparently. In a somewhat surprising move, Walt Disney World has revealed that it will be closing all of the nightclubs in its Pleasure Island complex this fall. Located in the Downtown Disney area of the resort, patrons pay an admission fee to enter the gated Pleasure Island at night when its six nightclubs come to life. According to information on the Disney World Web site, 8 Trax, The Adventurer's Club, Mannequins Dance Palace, BET Sound-Stage Club, Motion, and The Comedy Warehouse will all close on September 28. In its place, Disney promises more dining and retail locations--in other words, more of the free-access restaurants and shops that are available throughout the rest of Downtown Disney. No explanation has been giving for the closings, although one would have to imagine that Pleasure Island was not meeting the resort's financial goals. Still, shuttering all of the clubs will leave a nighttime void for Orlando-area visitors and locals alike. While it would seem to have taken its name from the amusement area depicted in Disney's classic film, Pinocchio, the nightclub complex did not take any inspiration from it. There was a theme park known as Pleasure Island in the Boston area that closed in the late 1960s. Featuring an Old West and a New England nautical theme, that park was connected to Pinocchio in name only as well.

Brandon, I wish you and those hoping to save PI the best, but this sure looks like a done deal to me. I’d be surprised, however, if Walt Disney World didn’t maintain some nightclubs–or open up some new ones. But I think the PI concept is finished.
