Way Better than Algebra

Tuesday May 27, 2008
Does the name X2 bring you back to high school algebra class? Forget about quadratic equations. Do however think about steep slopes and the fourth dimension. X2 is the name Six Flags Magic Mountain in Valencia, California has given to its new and improved X coaster. Since its debut in 2001, X has been one of the most unusual--and thrilling--coasters in the world. Unfortunately, it's also been x-cruciatingly slow loading and one of the most trouble-prone coasters as well. After pouring $10 million into the ride for redesigned trains and new sensory effects, the made-over attraction opened last week to rave reviews. Brady MacDonald at the LA Times went so far as to declare it the best roller coaster in America. Whoo! I rode the original X a few years ago and was highly impressed with its unique concept. The first thrill machine to incorporate the "4th dimension," it is like a hybrid Ferris wheel/roller coaster. The ride's seats, which are located along the sides of the tracks, pivot 360 degrees forwards and backwards. The jury is still out whether the $10 million makeover can improve loading and cut down on wait times. Let's see: If X equals the new theoretical capacity per hour and Y equals the average number of passengers in line for the coaster, then... Ah, forget it. I was never that great at algebra.
