A Park for Grouches
Tuesday March 25, 2008
Q: Can you tell me how to get, how to get to Sesame Street? A: Sure! Take I-95 north from Philadelphia. As you'd imagine, Sesame Place park in Langhorne, Pennsylvania is geared to young children and their families. As you may not imagine, the park is owned and operated by Busch Entertainment, the same folks that run the SeaWorld and Busch Gardens parks. (And don't Big Bird and Budweiser make strange bedfellows?) Themed to the landmark PBS children's show, Sesame Place is designed for a pre-teen audience with a special emphasis on the program's preschool audience. Granted, the park offers a coaster, spinning rides, water slides, and other attractions typically found at parks. But the relatively small Sesame Place foregoes the hyper-adrenalized atmosphere of a Six Flags in favor of a more low-key vibe. Reflecting the whimsy of the show and its Muppet stars, it features unique opportunities to visit mock-ups of the famous street and interact with the iconic, cuddly characters. Rest assured, there isn't a bottle of Budweiser to be found at the kid-centric park. Read more about Sesame Place.

Oh, Arthur, you got my hopes up and teased me with that headline! I thought that for once you’d be announcing a new park that some smart entrepreneur thought up that only admits adults, grouchy as they may be!
Susan-
Thanks for writing. So, are you saying you’re an admitted grouch–who would like to visit a theme park with like-minded malcontents? Actually, there is a rumor that Disney might be planning an adults-only (though not grouch-only) park at Walt Disney World. And in Carl Sagan’s novel, “Contact,” (but not the Hollywood film based on his book), there was a character who made a fortune by developing an adult–as in X-rated–theme park. Maybe you could be the smart entrepreneur who takes that idea and turns it into reality.
