The More Things Change...

Have you ever been at a theme park on a blisteringly hot day, waited in an interminable line, looked out at a sea of guests, and wondered what kind of attendance numbers the park was generating (and perhaps wished you had a cut of the action)? Most parks don't release attendance figures, but for many years the folks at the defunct Amusement Business trade publication published an annual report with estimated attendance numbers. Last year, TEA, a trade organization for designers of park attractions and other entertainment experiences, and ERA, a consulting firm specializing in the entertainment industry, picked up the baton. A few days ago, the two organizations released their 2007 park attendance report. You can view all of the charts at the TEA site. According to the report (and keep in mind, the numbers are estimated--and some park owners dispute the figures), despite a host of new attractions and investment, the total visits to the top 20 North American theme parks posted a moderate 2.6% gain to 122.8 million. The park generating the most turnstile clicks in both North America and around the world was the perennial winner, Magic Kingdom at Walt Disney World in Florida with over 17 million, a 2.5% increase. Holding steady in its usual number-two position worldwide was Disneyland Park in California with 14.9 million, a 1% increase. Disney parks held the top 5 positions in North America and the top 8 slots worldwide. Some notable numbers: Disney's California Adventure dropped 4.5% in attendance, despite the park chan's well-received Year of a Million Dreams promotion. It appears the planned $1 billion makeover of that park can't come too soon. Disney's Animal Kingdom, which debuted the popular Expedition Everest coaster, saw a 6.5% jump to 9.5 million. And Busch Gardens Europe, which launched the slick floorless diving coaster, Griffon, posted an impressive 12.5% gain with 3.2 million guests. Water parks, which are even more at the whim of weather conditions than theme parks, continued to show impressive growth in 2007. For example, the massive Hyland Hills Water World in Denver, CO, was up 26%, while Dollywood's Splash Country yielded a 19.8% gain.
