Wednesday October 31, 2007
Parks have been supersizing the thrills with faster and bigger rides. It turns out that the riders have been getting bigger as well. Robert Niles over at Theme Park Insider has an interesting article about the challenges that parks and ride designers are facing as the average weight of guests increases and their body shapes change. One case in point: The boats in the circa-1964 it's a small world (sic) attraction at Disneyland often bottom out and grind to a halt because of the increased passenger tonnage. To combat the problem, Disney is replacing the boats with more buoyant models and deepening the flume. You can read more at TPI's "Bigger riders" article.
