Kings Island's Son of Beast Thrown for a Loop

Monday December 18, 2006
The world's tallest, fastest wood coaster will lose another one of its superlatives when it opens for the 2007 season: the only wood coaster with a loop. Paramount's Kings Island in Ohio closed its record-breaking Son of Beast coaster in July when one of its trains experienced a malfunction and injured some passengers. According to the Associated Press, the ride's extra-heavy trains, which were needed to navigate the loop, caused a "pothole" in the track. While the loop itself was not to blame, the park will be able to substitute lighter trains once the loop is eliminated. Son of Beast is 218 feet tall and reaches a top speed of 78 mph.
