Water to Return to Vegas Desert

Monday September 25, 2006
When Wet 'n' Wild closed on the Las Vegas Strip a couple of years ago, it left the wildly popular tourist destination and booming metropolitan area as just about the only major outpost in the U.S with no water park. According to Globe St.com, Vegas' drought is almost over. A group known as Las Vegas Wet LLC, which includes vets from Disney, Universal, and other major park operators, has ambitious plans to build a $1.1 billion resort that will feature a huge indoor and outdoor water park, an indoor snow dome, a hotel, a performance arena, and--because this is Vegas--a casino. While the developers didn't reveal a specific location, they did say that the resort would be built on the Las Vegas Strip, but a bit removed from the hubbub. The proposed 30-acre water park would be highly themed and would include a giant wave pool and a lazy river that would connect some of the attractions. While there have been indoor snow domes, which allow year-round skiing and other winter activities, in Europe, Asia, and other locations, this would be the first such facility of its kind in the U.S. The developers hope to finalize their plans soon and are shooting for a late-2008 or early-2009 opening.
