Christmas in July

Friday July 7, 2006
Christmas came early for me this year when I received the gift of a new book, "Images of America: Holiday World." Written by the Indiana theme park's matriarch, Pat Koch, along with Jane Ammeson, the book is a series of annotated pictures depicting Holiday World through the years. Debuting in 1946 as Santa Claus Land, the park has a rich history, and the wealth of photos provides a great format to tell its story. The book details the highly regarded 2006 wood roller coaster, The Voyage, as well as the park's other famous woodies, the Raven and The Legend. While Holiday World is on the cutting edge of coaster thrills, the constant thread that runs through the park is the Koch family's careful stewardship of the Indiana gem and its old-fashioned devotion to friendly service, fun, cleanliness, and value. To learn more about Holiday World, and to discover how a theme park should be run, I highly recommend the book.
