May the G-Forces not Be with You

Friday May 5, 2006
The controversial Mission: SPACE attraction at Walt Disney World's Epcot will be offering a toned-down version of the ride. According to the Orlando Sentinel, Disney plans to reconfigure the attraction so that at least one of its four centrifuge systems will no longer spin. The four-person capsules of the "lite" ride will still pitch and roll in sync with the simulated space flight, but riders in the pod of ten capsules will not experience the sustained G-forces that the centrifuges deliver to riders of the regular attraction. Disney is positioning the ride modification as a way to make Mission: SPACE more accessible, not as a reaction to the two deaths or many illness complaints attributed to the attraction. The theme park is planning to reopen the revised part of the ride in June. The original portion of Mission: SPACE will remain open during the modifications.
