Branson's Theme Parks are a Gas, Gas, Gas

Friday April 21, 2006
Every time gas stations raise their prices--and that's been happening a lot lately--the nation's theme park operators (and other travel destinations) get a bit more agita. Branson, Missouri, home to Celebration City, Silver Dollar City, White Water water park, and Splash Country Indoor Waterpark at Grand Country Resort (as well as a bunch of country music theaters, hotels, and other fun stuff), has developed the Gas Buster discount card to fight the gas blues. The town's Chamber of Commerce will offer the card, which features $50 in savings at live shows, restaurants, and other attractions, to motorists who bring $40 worth of gas receipts to a Branson Welcome Center. It's an innovative program. Will higher gas prices, projected to average at least $3 per gallon at U.S. pumps this summer, make you think twice before you plan a vacation or head out for a day trip to a theme park? I imagine other parks and travel destinations will be creating similar programs to ease the gas pump sting.
