Oh the Weather Inside is Frightful
Monday December 19, 2005
They can't control Mother Nature, but enterprising park developers can design indoor environments to offer recreational opportunities that defy the prevailing weather. Indoor water parks, such as the Grand Rios near Minneapolis, allow folks to don skimpy bathing suits and ride lazy rivers year-round--even during Minnesota's unforgiving winters. But the Midwest's frozen hinterlands have something that people halfway around the world in the Middle East covet: snow. In a literal application of bringing the mountain to Mohamed, folks in the sweltering desert of the United Arab Emirates can now don parkas and ski down a snow-covered mountain year-round. Ski Dubai, recently opened at the The Mall of the Emirates (the third-largest mall in the world), is the world's first indoor snow park. The 25-story-high, 30,000-square-foot park offers five ski slopes of varying difficulty, a snowboarding half-pipe, sled runs, and a snowball shooting gallery. Coming soon: indoor camel racing in Antarctica.
