1st and Ten for Snyder as Six Flags Management Fumbles
Wednesday November 30, 2005
After months of acrimony and posturing between Daniel Snyder and Six Flags, the outspoken owner of the Washington Redskins football team now sits on the embattled company's board of directors. The theme park chain conceded that its shareholders voted to replace three board members, including its CEO and CFO, with Snyder and two of his allies, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. While the managers still control day-to-day operations, Snyder wants to be chairman and place ESPN executive Mark Shapiro as the company's chief executive. Red Zone, Snyder's investment firm, now holds three of the seven seats on Six Flags' board and will likely move ahead with its reorganization plans. What this will mean for the parks is unclear, although Snyder has said that he wants to de-emphasize the coasters and thrill rides for which Six Flags is famous and create more of a "family" atmosphere. It's possible that Snyder could be shown the exit gate before he has a chance to warm up a roller coaster seat. Six Flags had already placed itself on the auction block, and a buyer (expected to be named before January) other than Red Zone could assume control of the company.
