No More Riding with the King at Libertyland

Monday November 28, 2005
Tennessee seems to be on the verge of losing another amusement park. The board of directors at Libertyland in Memphis announced that the park will not reopen in 2006 due to mounting financial losses. A local group is trying to save the small park, although it's unclear whether it has the wherewithal to succeed. Libertyland was Elvis Presley's favorite amusement park, and the hunka hunka burning love was especially fond of its circa-1915 Zippin Pippin wood roller coaster. Folks who zipped around on the classic coaster will have a heavy heart, and the shuttered Libertyland will leave another major Tennessee city without a park. Nashville's Opryland closed a few years ago to make way for a mega mall. Also closing its gates this season is Six Flags Astroworld in Houston. The theme park chain says that the land on which the under-performing park sits would be worth more if they sold it to real estate developers.
