Six Flags Over Cedar Point?

Tuesday October 11, 2005
Troubled Six Flags, which placed its chain of amusement parks up for sale in August after a hostile takeover bid from disgruntled shareholder Daniel Snyder, says that a long list of potential buyers are vying for the golden ticket. Among the suitors: Cedar Fair, the parent company of Cedar Point, Knott's Berry Farm, and a number of other amusement parks and water parks. According to The (Toledo, Ohio) Blade, Cedar Fair says that it has the resources to make a play for the playtime company, but that it is poring over Six Flags' financial records to ensure that the deal would be prudent. On the surface, a Cedar Fair-led Six Flags would seem to make sense. The Ohio-based company certainly has a long and respected track record. But another round of consolidation in an industry that is already dominated by a handful of major players would further stifle competition and homogenize parks that need creativity to thrive. If Cedar Fair bought Six Flags, the combined company would own both Six Flags Great Adventure, home of Kingda Ka, the world's tallest, fastest coaster, and Cedar Point, home of the previous record-holder, Top Thrill Dragster. Park fans would seem to be better served by maintaining two distinct--and successful--companies that would continue to strive for bragging rights.
