Set Your Flags to Half-mast: Six Flags is Sending Astroworld into Orbit
Tuesday September 13, 2005
Seeking to raise some cash, debt-ridden Six Flags announced today that it will close its Astroworld park at the end of the season. According to the Houston Chronicle, attendance has been dropping, while the park's real estate value has been rising. The 37-year-old landmark is part of Houston's Reliant Park complex (which includes the shuttered Astrodome). A real estate developer estimated the 109-acre property could fetch up to $145 million. Six Flags says that it will keep the adjacent Splashtown water park open. The embattled Six Flags has been engaged in a takeover battle with Daniel Snyder, owner of the Washington Redskins and a major Six Flags shareholder. Astroworld will close forever on October 30, the final day of its Fright Fest Halloween event.
