Geauga Lake Tames Hurricane, Goes Wild

Thursday November 11, 2004
Tossed around like a pariah the past couple of years, Ohio's Geauga Lake had been promising a major announcement to help kick-start the ailing park for the 2005 season. Now part of the Cedar Fair family (which includes the roller coaster mecca, Cedar Point), industry observers, park fans, and thrill ride freaks had been anticipating that a mega coaster or two might be in the works. Instead, Geauga Lake just made the head-scratching revelation that it will be investing $26 million to build...a water park? You see, it already has a water park--and a pretty decent one at that. Hurricane Hannah (formerly Hurricane Harbor when Six Flags ran the show) has a huge water slide complex, a wave pool, a lazy river, and all of the usual water park goodies. But Geauga Lake plans to build a new water park, Wildwater Kingdom, on the site of the now-shuttered SeaWorld property. Next season, it will open phase one of the new park, which will include a Tornado funnel ride, and retain some of the existing Hurricane Hannah water attractions. In 2006, phase two will open, and the 20-acre Wildwater Kingdom will house all of the water park rides. That will leave some prime acreage in the dry ride part of Geauga Lake for--oh, I don't know...a mega coaster or two? The park also announced that it will be dropping its admission price by $10 next season and offering season passes that will include admission to other Cedar Fair parks.
