Aye, Robot: Disney's Animatronics Inspired "Stepford Wives"

Friday June 11, 2004
I haven't seen "The Stepford Wives" remake that's opening today, but I do know that the Ira Levin novel on which the movie is based has a theme park connection. The scheming husbands in Levin's fictional town of Stepford are ex-Disney Imagineers that transform their suburban wives into animatronic mannequins a la Pirates of the Caribbean. It kind of gives a whole new meaning to "E-Ticket ride," doesn't it? By the way, the first attraction to feature animatronics was The Enchanted Tiki Room, which is still enchanting guests at Disneyland.
Another classic animatronic attraction: The Haunted Mansion
