Tall Water Park Tales in Minnesota

Friday April 30, 2004
"America's Biggest Indoor Waterpark," says the tag line on the Web site for the Water Park of America. According to the Wirth Companies, the developers of the project, the proposed water park resort will include a 70,000 square-foot indoor water park. That's going to be a huge park, but here's the problem: The indoor water parks at Wisconsin Dells' Kalahari and Wilderness resorts both exceed the size of the planned Minnesota project. (In fact, the Wilderness is more than double the size.) Maybe hyperbole is endemic in the land of Paul Bunyan. Nevertheless, the site of the proposed resort will be next to Minneapolis' Mall of America, the country's largest mall. And plans call for an enormous ten-story water slide tower that guests will access via elevator. The Wirth Companies will also be opening the Grand Rios, a 45,000 square-foot indoor water park and resort in Brooklyn Park, Minnesota this summer.
