Debbie Does the Smokies

Friday March 5, 2004
A legendary female entertainer plans to open a vacation resort with amusement rides, restaurants, shops, and exhibits featuring movie memorabilia in the Smoky Mountain village of Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. Ha! That'll never work. Wait a minute, Dolly Parton has been doing the same thing at her successful Dollywood for years. The country gal may be getting some cross-town competition from Debbie Reynolds, star of films such as "Singing in the Rain," "Tammy and the Bachelor," and "The Unsinkable Molly Brown," if plans move forward for her proposed Belle Island project. A failed Las Vegas hotel that bore her name closed a few years back, so Reynolds is anything but unsinkable when it comes to tourist attractions. The Hollywood Motion Picture Museum part of the project may open as early as next year.
