Luna Park Lives!
Friday January 30, 2004
In its heyday (the early 1900s), Coney Island's Luna Park--along with Steeplechase Park--was the epicenter of roller coasters and amusements. The New York City landmark was so popular that copycat Luna Parks popped up all over the world. Kennywood in Pittsburgh, PA pays tribute to Scranton's long-shuttered Luna Park with its Lost Kennywood area. All of the real Luna Parks are but postcard memories, with one exception: Sydney, Australia's Luna Park lives on. In fact, according to the Sydney Herald Sun, the waterfront park has plans to add a multiplex cinema, a "Coney Island" function center, and classic rides such as a Wild Mouse, Rotor, and Ferris wheel this season.
