How Many Roller Coasters will $18 Billion Buy?
Friday October 24, 2003
The government of Dubai in the United Arab Emirates is developing Dubailand, an $18 billion theme park project, according to AmusementBusiness.com. To be built in phases, initial plans call for attractions featuring dinosaurs, pyramids, and space travel as well as an indoor ski slope, an artificial rain forest, and the world's largest shopping mall to open in 2006. To put this in perspective, a top-shelf roller coaster costs around $8 to $10 million dollars these days. The ultra-sophisticated Mission:SPACE attraction at Epcot cost about $100 million, according to estimates. When Disney built Epcot, which opened in 1982, the company said the entire park project cost $1 billion. If Dubailand moves forward with its $18 billion price tag intact, it may rival Walt Disney World in terms of capital expenditures.
